How to Choose the Right Tablecloth Size | Saanjh Living
Setting the table is one of those little joys that makes a meal feel special. The food, the flowers, the lighting and yes, the tablecloth. It’s the backdrop that ties everything together and protects the table from spills and scratches (because there’s always room for an oops). It softens the space, brings warmth, and makes everything look more intentional.
The tricky part? Figuring out what size tablecloth for your table actually looks best.
Don’t worry, I know, I hate math too! But it’s much simpler than it sounds, and once you know, you’ll never second-guess it again.
Rectangle, round, square, or oval, we’ve got you (and your table) covered. Let’s get started:
Plan Ahead
Do you want a relaxed, everyday vibe, or are you setting the stage for a formal gathering? The answer decides how long your tablecloth “drop” should be (that’s just a not-so-fancy word for how far it hangs over the sides).
- Casual gathering: 8 - 12 inches, easy, relaxed and crisp.
- Formal events: 15 - 30 inches, polished and elegant, think your grandma’s lace tablecloth that almost touched the floor.
- Weddings & big celebrations: let it extend all the way to the floor, like a ball gown.
Measuring the Table
Dining tables today come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. We’ll cover the four classics - rectangle, round, oval, and square, so you can find the best fit for your table.
Rectangle Tables:
Rectangular tables remain the most popular choice all over the world.
To find the perfect tablecloth for your table, measure the table’s length and width. Next, add twice the desired drop, and you will get the size your tablecloth needs to be.
Required length = Table length + ( 2 × drop width )
Required width = Table width + ( 2 × drop width )
For instance, if your table is 54 inches wide and 92 inches long, with a 8 in drop on all sides, your tablecloth measurements will be 70 inches wide and 108 inches long.
Let’s do the math. Boring? Yes. But it's just a quick one, I promise.
54 + (2 x 8) = 70 inches and 92 + (2 x 8) = 108 inches
Round tables:
Round tables create a warm and intimate setting for gatherings, and it's easier to find the right fit.
Just measure the diameter, right across the centre. Add twice the drop, and that’s your round tablecloth size!
Required size = Diameter + ( 2 × drop width )
For Example, if you are wondering what size tablecloth will fit your 60-inch round table,  add twice the desired drop. For a 6-inch drop, you’ll need a 72-inch-long tablecloth.
60 + (2 x 6 ) = 72 inches
Square tables:
Square tables add a modern and balanced look to your dining space.
Your final measurement will be the side of your table plus twice the drop.
Required size = Side length + ( 2 × drop width )
Here’s a quick example: If your table is 70 in on each side and you want a 10 in drop, your tablecloth should measure around 90 inches.
70 + (2 x 10 ) = 90 inches
Oval tables:
Measure your oval table just like a rectangle, length and width. If you can’t find an oval cloth, a rectangle one works well too, though the corners will drape a little longer.

Extra Tips for a beautiful fit
Here are a few final things to keep in mind when choosing your tablecloth:
- If you can’t find the exact size, round up the measurements or go one size bigger.
- Heavier fabrics (like jacquards) need less overhang, while cotton and linen drape more easily.
- Interior design “rules” are helpful, but honestly, what fun is that? The most important thing is to create a look you’ll love in your home. Try out different sizes, drops, or shapes and see what feels right for your space..
- A few creative ideas: try a square cloth on a round table, or a rectangle on an oval one. Play around, mix it up! The most charming tablescapes often come from a little rule-breaking.
